After Videos Of A Black Woman's Killing By Police Were Released, Biden Called For Justice

Moments after startling police footage showing an Illinois cop killing Sonya Massey after she contacted police fearing a house invader was leaked, Joe Biden urged Congress to approve the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

In his first public speech following a conflict over a pot of boiling water, Biden said the shooting of 36-year-old Black woman Massey by white Sangamon county sheriff's deputy Sean Grayson in her house in Springfield, "reminds us that all too often Black Americans face fears for their safety in ways many of the rest of us do".

Recovering from COVID-19 at his Delaware residence, Biden remarked, "a beloved mother, friend, daughter and young Black woman... should be alive today."

"When we call for help, all of us as Americans – regardless of who we are or where we live – should be able to do so without fearing for our life," he said in the statement adding: "Sonya's family deserves justice."

"Let us pray to ease the grieving while we wait for the case to be prosecuted," he said. Congress has to act now to enact the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Our basic dedication to justice is on trial here.

Known as HR-1280, the legislation raises law enforcement responsibility for misbehavior and tackles a spectrum of problems in policing techniques, including racial prejudice and too forceful methods. The House passed the measure in 2021; it languished in the Senate.

The comment coincided with a planned protest march on Monday evening following the publication of police bodycam footage revealing a fast worsening scenario.

After Grayson informed Massey he did not want a home fire, Massey was pulling a kettle of water off the stove. Massey questioned the officials, who clearly turned away from her as she walked to tend to the pot, about their behavior.

"Where you going?" she asks them.

Grayson says, laughing, "Away from your hot steaming water," before Massey responds: "Away from the hot steaming water? Oh, I will chastise you under the name of Jesus.

"You better fuck not." Grayson cautions, "I swear to God I'll fuck you straight in your fucking face."

As Grayson keeps moving forward, Massey can be heard apologizing, "I'm sorry." "I'm sorry," she pleads once more as Grayson, with his rifle pulled, shoots three rounds immediately killing her. Another deputy said following the incident that he was going to retrieve his medical pack.

Grayson answers, "No, a head shot, buddy, she's done."

Grayson refers to Massey "fucking crazy" later in the video.

Referring to the picture leaked following Emmett Till's lynching in Mississippi in 1955, the eminent civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, representing Massey's family, had said the video will "shock the conscience of America like the pictures of Emmett Till after he was lynched."

Crump further compared the footage to the police murder of George Floyd in 2020 and to the shooting sixteen times in the back by Chicago police of Laquan McDonald in 2014.

"It is that senseless, that unnecessary, that unjustifiable, that unconstitutional,," Crump said Friday during Massey's burial. In all respects, this video is sad.

Grayson is being detained without bond until his trial is scheduled to start; he has three charges of first-degree murder levied against him. Tiara Standage, a Springfield resident, told the Guardian that she became agitated upon viewing the George Floyd footage. Watching this made me even more agitated.

Local community leader Antwaun Readus Sr. attacked municipal authorities for lavishing money on police gear while underfunding of fundamental community services.

"They militarized the entire police department," he claimed, foretelling that "the whole country can go upside down when the police video of Massey's death comes out."
