New York Fashion Week Last Year: A lack of plus-size models

There has been a drop in fashion’s size-inclusivity in the recent times. At New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2023, there was a lack of plus-size models on the runways. Body diversity is not being given enough importance. The plus-size fashion industry is struggling to come back after the pandemic. Many brands cut their plus-size division and rolled it back after they could not be profitable. Plus-size options are very limited. Such rollbacks are not good. Body diversity at NYFW was increasing from 2016 to 2020. The number of curve models increased from 14 to 68. Then, in Fall 2020, there was a decline with only 27 plus-size models. In Spring 2022, there was increase up to 48 curve size models. In Fall 2022, the number went to 51.

There were many pre-castings. But then, there were the same faces on the runway that were seen the last season. Covid has made a paradigm shift in fashion. Body positivity and size-inclusivity is talked about on social media. When there was financial stress, many brands played safe. Including plus size is an economic risk. It requires a heavy initial amount and long-term investment. Many designers focused on customers that they had and didn’t go for new customers. They didn’t think anything new. They only had 1 or 2 curve girls because the economy can be unpredictable. The market is for the thin size. This is not just restricted to America. Many European

fashion weeks also emphasize thin sizes. But Copenhagen Plus Curve Female NY Fashion Week had shown body diversity in shows like Aeron and A. Roege Hove.

Y2K fashion has come up. There is skinny bodies that everyone wants. Over the pandemic, many

people gained weight. This has led to losing interest in larger sizes on the runway. There is tokenism. Only one or two curve girls and rest are size zero.

There should be size expansion. There should not be just one curve model on the runway. But, there should be more sizes. And it requires a major investment from designers. Many designers do not understand this. They are not aware of the importance of size-inclusive design. Or, maybe it is not something that is taught at fashion institutes.

There are some designers who have showed attention to body diversity. For example, Christian
Siriano and Tommy Hilfiger. Tommy Hilfiger actually had two plus-size male models on the runway. Fashion seems to have a problem with body inclusivity. Plus-size men are not really seen on the runways. But, there should be new changes in the fashion landscape for body diversity to be shown in the most plausible way.
