Community Bonding and Local Support

Thanks to the hard work of Lawrence County residents who founded this festival, it has been growing ever since, giving the people of southwest Mississippi a place to come enjoy a peaceful weekend with nature and wonderful music just outside your tent or camper door. The event has even become a long-standing family tradition, with some attending for as long as 40 years without missing a year.

The history of the Atwood music festival is a joyous reminder of humanity. It all began when the locals of Lawrence County, Mississippi wanted to create a festival around the celebration of Memorial Day. In 1975, they hosted the very first little celebration of patriotism and love of country music in the heart of Monticello city. Since then, it has been a carnival that locals look forward to all year. The Atwood Music event is Mississippi's longest-running outdoor music event.

On Memorial Day weekend, the first-ever event was held at the Atwood Water Park, including Doc Watson, Lester Flatt, and the Nashville Grass. This festival provided a wonderful opportunity for people from all over the county, as well as some from neighboring counties, to spend time with family and friends while also taking in everything that the beautiful park next to the Pearl River had to offer.
